She Was All Alone...

"We were encamped somewhere in the middle of Iraq. I had walked off into the desert to relieve myself. And I came upon her. She was a child maybe ten years old. She was all alone, and she was badly burned. From what, I don't know. I thought at first that I could treat her and help her. She kept saying ma'an, the Arab word for water. Ma'an. Ma'an. Ma'an. I didn't understand...Her skin was like leather, it was so burned. I couldn't find a vein. And I was afraid... I was afraid of causing her more harm."
